Spring 2011

Dear No-Rosion Customer,

I hope this letter finds you (and your cars) healthy, and raring to go this Spring!

As you probably already know, I send this letter every spring and fall in order to keep you up-to-date on the latest information in coolant technology. I also use it to share answers to questions that I hear most frequently from automotive enthusiasts. Because odds are, at some point, you have probably had the same question.

That is the reason why I answer the phone when you call.  Speaking directly with customers allows me to keep in touch with what’s happening.  I find great value and enjoyment in discussing the issues you encounter in the maintenance and enjoyment of your vehicles. It sometimes translates directly into research that our firm uses in developing new products that will continue to meet your specialized needs.

Which product is better for my application - No-Rosion or HyperKuhl?  You should consider using HyperKuhl SuperCoolant if your engine: (a) overheats, (b) has a high compression ratio, or (c) is frequently used in racing.  For all other applications, you are better off with No-Rosion Corrosion Inhibitor.

The only thing that No-Rosion lacks versus HyperKuhl is wetting agents. These chemical ingredients, known as surfactants, reduce the surface tension of coolant. This allows coolant to more efficiently transfer heat away from hot metal surfaces, resulting in a cooler running engine.

How does the new No-Rosion formula compare to the old one?  As you may already know, last year we upgraded our formula for the first time in 15 years. It now contains new, state-of-the-art organic ingredients that provide improved protection of aluminum, copper, and brass.  Here are the results of the ASTM D2570  Simulated Service laboratory test, which evaluates weight loss (in milligrams) due to corrosion:

                                                New Formula                      Old Formula                       Maximum

Weight Loss (mg)              Weight Loss (mg)              ASTM Limit (mg)

Copper                                             1                                           7                                         20

Solder                                              0                                           0                                         60

Brass                                               2                                            3                                         20

Steel                                                 0                                           0                                         20

Cast Iron                                          0                                           0                                         20

Cast Aluminum                                0                                           0                                         60

You will notice that both formulas have zero aluminum weight loss.  So I am sure you are asking: Where is the improvement?  I should point out that this test evaluates performance in a single set of operating conditions. As we know, engines see many different conditions. Our new formula provides better aluminum protection in a much wider variety of conditions than our old formula - conditions beyond those measured in this test. But this test is useful, as it allows direct performance comparisons to be made between different products.

Please note, even though we have the ability to conduct the ASTM D2570 test in our own lab, these results were generated by a third-party, independent coolant lab. This assures that there is no bias.

How does HyperKuhl compare to Red Line Water Wetter?   In the same ASTM D2570 weight loss test:

                                                   HyperKuhl                            Red Line                        Maximum

SuperCoolant (mg)            Water Wetter (mg)            ASTM Limit (mg)

Copper                                             1                                            6                                        20

Solder                                              5                                            25                                      60

Brass                                                2                                            5                                        20

Steel                                                 1                                            4                                        20

Cast Iron                                          0                                            0                                        20

Cast Aluminum                                0                                            34                                      60

Both products provide comparable temperature reduction. And both pass the ASTM D2570 test. But as indicated above, HyperKuhl clearly provides corrosion protection that is superior to that of Water Wetter.

If HyperKuhl contains the same inhibitors as No-Rosion, then why are the test results different?

No-Rosion actually provides slightly better corrosion protection that HyperKuhl. Why? It has to do with the surfactants in HyperKuhl. Both products protect metal surfaces by forming molecular-thin surface films.  But the surfactants that allow HyperKuhl to help engines run cooler slightly impede inhibitors ability to form surface films on certain metals.  Not by much.  But just enough to provide a tad less corrosion protection.

I used Water Wetter, and found brown slime in my coolant.  What is it?  This product contains a marginally soluble ingredient called polysiloxane polymer, or silicone. Through repeated heating/cooling cycles, silicone becomes insoluble, forming an oily slime that polymerizes and turns brown. It can look like motor oil in coolant, so do not mistake it for a blown head gasket! Learn more by Google searching these words: Water Wetter brown. Comparatively, HyperKuhl contains no silicone, and is 100% soluble at all temperatures.

As already mentioned, our research in the area of coolant technology remains ongoing.  Working with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), we continue to develop new products in the areas of corrosion inhibitors, heat transfer agents, and cooling system cleaners. It is an important part our commitment to you, the customer. It is also an important part of the private label division of our firm, as we now provide coolant additives to some of the biggest and most widely recognized oil and lubricant brands in the industry.

It has already been 16 years since we first introduced No-Rosion! As a token of our appreciation for being a loyal customer, we are providing a 16% discount on orders placed by 6/1/2011.  To qualify, write sweet sixteen on your rder form.  Or, if you place your order online, please type this in the Order Comments box that appears at the bottom of the Order Review screen. (This appears after the credit card screen.)

Remember, the protection that No-Rosion and HyperKuhl provide is depleted over time.  So it is important for you to add a bottle every year. And if it has been over 5 years since you last changed your coolant, IT IS TIME!  Consider using one of our flush products to maximize system cleanliness.

Please find the enclosed form that can be used to order any of our products. Or, you can order online using our secure, encrypted web site at:  www.No-Rosion.com.  And as always, please contact me if I can answer any questions. My direct line is (847) 477-9262, and my email is: Norosion@aol.com. Have a great summer!

Sincerely,
